Family Vacation
Family experts give tips for making the next family
vacation less stressful on parents.
-
Instead of carrying a baby bag such on one shoulder,
try a backpack instead. This will free up your hands for tending to the
children.
-
When traveling by plane, pack frozen juice boxes in the
backpack. They will stay cool and are healthier than soft drinks. If you are
traveling by car, you can easily keep these in a cooler.
-
If you are taking a small baby on a plane trip, try
using a sling carrier instead of a stroller or hand carrier. Not only is it
easier and less bulky, but it also keeps the child's head close to your heart,
which makes for a more restful sleep.
-
Carry a spill-proof, plastic cup for each child. Bring
along a few plastic zippered bags to make sure nothing spills out if the child
does not finish the drink.
-
Make sure to bring along extras of everything,
including a change of clothes. You never know when someone is going to spill
something on you or if your luggage will be lost.
-
Before you leave the house, place a few $1 bills and a
roll of quarters in the outside pocket of the backpack. These will come in
handy for vending machines.
-
Cereal makes for one of the best travel snacks. You can
fill up a plastic bag with it and you don't have to worry about whether it
gets crushed. Plus, children think it's fun to eat cereal with no milk.
-
If you are traveling with more than one child, games
are essential. They're easy to bring along and can provide hours of
entertainment. Be sure to only bring games that the children already know how
to play, so there is no dispute over the rules.
-
A travel pillow is a must on any trip. Here's a compact
idea: Take an old pair of sweatpants and cut the legs off at the calf. Stitch
the cut side shut and stuff with a jacket or sweater. It takes up very little
space in carryon luggage.
