Preparing for
Guests
For serving breakfast to casual close
friends, simply go with the "help-yourselves " policy. Leave a note out where
the basic items are kept in case guests rise earlier than the hosts. Put milk and fresh orange juice out, and
place a bowl of ice in medium-size metal mixing bowl on the table (figure
A). Doughnuts and pastries are both easy to
arrange and make a nice breakfast treat. Select a variety so guests can choose
the kind they like (figure B). A variety pack of cereals are a great
idea for multiple guests. Brew a fresh pot of coffee, or set up
the coffee maker so that it is ready to go. The aroma of coffee is a
pick-me-up and pleasant smell in the morning. For a more formal arrangement, make a
continental breakfast in the morning. It 's a great idea for those who have to
get up earlier and will be out the door before the guests awaken. A
continental breakfast should include easy-to-prepare items. A bag of fresh bagels, or a loaf of
bread, are both good ideas. Place the toaster near or on the breakfast buffet. Have plates, bowls and utensils laid out
along with some napkins. Put condiments such as butter and jams in small bowls
for a prettier presentation. Make a set of keys for guests so they
can come and go as they please with little bother for the hosts. Also give
out-of-town guests street maps of the city so that they can find their way
around. This will help them and it will save the hosts the trouble of having
to give directions each time they go somewhere. Let guests know what the holiday
schedule is by placing an itinerary in a frame in each guestroom. Buy new toothbrushes for each guest.
It's always refreshing to open up a brand new toothbrush in the morning, and
it's a pleasant surprise for them. Buy a travel-size razor and shaving
cream and other travel-size toiletries for each guest. Put the items in a
small basket for each guest, so that they can carry them back and forth from
the bathroom.
