How about a time capsule in celebration of the New Year? Here are
a few viewer ideas for making one of your own.
Container ideas
popcorn tin
five-gallon plastic bucket
new paint can from hardware store
colored tin from craft stores
recycled cookie tins
Really, there are no limits here. Find a container that will hold your
memorabilia and decorate it (figure A).
Decorating ideas
Cover the tin with metal paint. If you want to cover on the first coat, visit
the hardware store and purchase a metal paint there. It will probably cover more
easily than craft metal paints. Another option is to write on the tins with
metal paint pens, or cover the tins with magazine cutouts, other paper designs
and glue. Make the cutouts representative of the things inside the time capsule
or of pop culture headliners of the day (figure A). Coat the glued-on cutout
components with a heavy marine varnish to finish.
Time capsule stuffing ideas
Newspaper ads, magazine articles and ads, television listings, taping favorite
television shows, hot item toys, etc.
Jayme McCoy from Windham, N.H., phoned in to share an idea for making mini-time
capsules to give as New Year's party favors (figure B).
Jayme starts with a toilet paper core , stuffs it with movie ticket stubs,
restaurant receipts, newspaper clippings, matchbooks, photos, commemorative
coins and more then wraps it all up in newspaper covered with brightly-covered
cellophane with a tag that reads, "Time Capsule for You. Do not open until the
year 2020." Jayme ties the ends off with bows and the favor is ready . Her idea
is to have a party in the year 2020 and open all the favors up. What a terrific
idea!
Crafty Party Hats
Robin Jennings from Punta Gorda, Fla., called in to share a New Year's party
entertainment idea that's sure to please all crafters on hand. Robin
suggests making zany New Year's hats (figure C) using newspaper and masking
tape, then moving along to a craft-station table to decorate the hat with
paints, markers, beads, feathers and other embellishments.
To fashion the hats, you'll need a victim (that is, a guest), some newspaper and
masking tape.
Steps:
1. Open up the newspaper and place it on the guest's head (figure D).
2. Layer on more paper then start taping and flipping the paper upward to create
a brim (figure E), fitting the hat to the guest's head. Get the other guests
involved in the merrymaking. The more folks involved, the more fun the process
will be!
