Temporary Jewelry Fixes
Jeweler shares his techniques for quick jewelry repairs.
-
If a ring is so large that is slips off your finger,
wrap a pipe cleaner around the underside of the band to hold it on until it
can be resized by a jeweler. Trim the pipe cleaner with needle-nose pliers
(see photo).
-
For stuck rings, spray the finger with glass cleaner,
then twist it around. It should come off easily. Once it is off, wipe the ring
clean with a towel.
-
Use a safety pin to hold a necklace together if the
clasp breaks. Just insert an open pin through each side of the broken clasp,
then close the pin.
-
If the pin falls out of a watchband, use a paper clip
to hold the watch and band together until a new pin can be installed.
-
Form a paper clip into a small loop to fix jewelry with
missing links. Just wrap the paper clip around a pencil and cut it to serve as
a small replacement loop.
-
Use epoxy rather than super glue to replace stones.
-
If your skin is fairly acidic, apply clear nail polish
to the inside of your rings to keep them from turning your finger green. The
same tip works for earrings.
